The 2016 Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance has just been wrapped up, And millions of dollars have changed hands. This year, the auctions were held on 20th and 21st August, and 140 vehicles went under the hammer. The auctions were carried out by Goodwing & Company, Mecum Auctions, Russo and Steele and RM Sotheby’s. According to a report published by Hagerty, a classic car insurance agency, total sales have amounted to $288 million on day one of the auctions. Here are the most expensive cars sold:
1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione Coupe
A 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione Coupe showcased by Goodwing & Company sold for $13.5 million. This car had secured seventh place in the overall category at the 1960 Le Mans. It has a 2,953cc, V12 engine which as per estimates makes around 280PS.
This 1962 Shelby Cobra CSX 2000 attracted quite a few high bids. Ultimately it was sold for $13.75 million, setting a new record for the most expensive American car to be sold at a public auction. What makes this car special and worthy of being the most expensive is that it was owned by its creator, racing legend Caroll Shelby, until his death in 2012. The previous record for most expensive American car was held by a 1968 Ford GT40 racing car which was sold for a bid of $11 million.
1959 Ferrari 250 GT California LWB Alloy Spider
Goodwing & Company displayed a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT California LWB Alloy Spider which sold for $18.15 million. Ferrari had made only 50 such cars, and this particular model won the Emeritus Cup at the 2016 Cavallino Classic. This particular model has participated in quite a few races between 1959 and 1964. As per Goodwing & Company, this car still has the original chassis, gearbox and engine.
1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider
1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo Spider. It was sold for a staggering $19.8 million. According to Hagerty, this one set a new record for the most expensive prewar car sold at a public auction.
1955 Jaguar D-Type
A 1955 Jaguar D-Type car was auctioned at the RM Sotheby’s event for $21.7 million. According to Hagerty, it is the most expensive British automobile that has been sold till now at a public auction. What makes this D-Type special is that it had won the 1965 LeMans 24 Hours endurance race.
These are the overall top five sales from the auctions held on Saturday. The Sunday sales and final overall highest sales haven’t been announced yet.
