Indian Motorcycles teases all-new Chief, India launch on the cards as well

Polaris-owned Indian Motorcycles is looking to make a comeback and in a big way. Indian has teased in what may be the first of its motorcycles in 2013, the iconic Chief. Other details are unclear as of now, but what we do know is that the 2014 Chief will be powered by a Thunderstroke 111 cubic inches (1819cc) V-twin engine. A few months back the company had showcased its all-new engine at the Daytona Bike Week in the USA and then announced that it will power its entire 2014 range of motorcycles. The 1819cc 49 degree V-Twin engine makes 155Nm of torque and is built at the Osceola, Wisconsin at the Polaris Industries engine assembly plant. The entire motorcycle will be assembled at Polaris’ production facility in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
What is interesting is that Polaris already has a presence in India through its ATVs and has hinted on their website that Indian Motorcycles are headed for our shores. If you are interested in buying a big iconic American cruiser, this should certainly be worth the wait.

2013 Peugeot 308 hatchback unveiled

Peugeot has lifted the wraps off its new 308 hatchback. The new car now bears the design language or rather the family look with a familiar face first seen on the 2008 crossover. The grille is a lot more tighter looking in appearance and the headlamps now gets the full LED treatment. The fog lamps are more pronounced than before and have a rakish hood to go along with. The split-five-spoke alloys wheels in themselves look quite cool. The C-pillar is a windowless affair while the rear has the three Peugeot (lion) claws design for the LED lamps.
As far as interiors go, Peugeot is bragging big about their 9.7-inch touchscreen i-cockpit. The instrument cluster is a head-up unit and Peugeot claims that its no-button strategy will help the driver focus on the road rather than being bothered about which switch is where. Peugeot has built the 308 on its new modular EMP2 platform which has reduced the overall weight of the car by a good 140kg. The company claims that the new 308 is more dynamically acclaimed than its predecessor and special attention has also been given on the ride quality. The new Peugeot 308 will be built at the company’s Sochaux plant in France.
While no word has been released yet about the choice of engines, we expect Peugeot to bring in both petrol and diesel powertrains to the equation. The 308 hatchback will have its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. Sales for the 308 will start from January 2014.

Finally Revealed: Mercedes S-Class 2014

There are three cars in the world with such unimpeachable credentials for the job they do they will never, ever find themselves referred to as a ‘some other car’s rival’. Others may indeed be their rivals, but it is never the reverse.

And it was ever thus, largely because they wrote the rules for the segments they dominate. And now, with the launch of the new Mercedes Benz S-Class hot on the heels of the new Range Rover and new Porsche 911, all three have had a new lease of life in the last 12 months.

So there it is, in the gallery. We’ll come to the looks in a bit, but what about the car itself? Did Benz knock the old car down and start again like the aluminium fourth generation Range Rover, or is it a subtle yet dramatic evolution like the generation 991 Porsche 911? Umm…. It’s kind of neither. At least not on paper.

After the teasers and this accidental leak, Mercedes has finally unveiled the eighth generation S-Class.

The technological evolution of the automobile can be charted with every new iteration of the S Class, and this is the eighth all-new car. Each has arrived on a raft of blazing new technology, technology which eventually ended up on just about every other car, sooner or later.

This one, which its maker describes as ‘Utopian’, has an in-built air-freshener, or ‘air purifying system’, or ‘Air Balance’. It will feature refillable scent pots at around £50 each, or you can use your favourite aftershave. It’s hard to know where the idea ends or the technology starts, or indeed what we should call it. But your car will have one soon. If it doesn’t already. It’s churlish to mention it so soon — there is more significant new kit on the car — but in S-Class launches gone by, such trivialities wouldn’t even be deemed worthy of a mention.

Moving on. The new S Class launches in two body lengths, the long wheelbase we are to regard as the standard car and its SWB sibling. There will be more; a super-long wheelbase Pullman (in lieu of the Maybach), a coupe (the next CL), and even four door convertible apparently.
There are four drivetrains at launch, a six-cylinder petrol hybrid (S400 Hybrid), a five litre V8 (S500), a six cylinder diesel (S350), and a four cylinder diesel hybrid (S300 BlueTEC hybrid). The later is the Utopian car Benz has referred to with its ‘official’ 64mpg and 115 grams of carbon/kilometre. The later would be more impressive had Porsche not just launched a 91mpg, 82g/km Panamera hybrid.
Full credit to Mercedes, it has recognised that even the rich don’t like a car that thumbs its nose each time its chauffeur visits the pumps. But with two of its three rivals (the Audi A8 and the Jag XJ) taking the full aluminium route, it does seem old-school for Benz to be sticking with half and half steel and aluminium. That said, both Jaguar and Audi have suggested their customers don’t actually know or ultimately care what their cars are made of.
The lightweight body shell however does give you the chance to fit every conceivable piece of kit without troubling the upper regions of tubbiness. Benz are saying the new S tips the scale either side of two tonnes depending on drivetrain, so it’s no lightweight. But it’s got the lot: we can’t think of anything remotely sensible that this car doesn’t offer. And clearly Benz can’t either, hence the Febreze.
The front of the cabin is dominated (literally — you wouldn’t call it harmonious) by two 12.3ins screens. One houses what we called ‘the instruments’ back in the last century, the other all the other controls for important stuff like the type of and rate of massage being applied to the driver’s and passenger’s backs and bums. As we saw a few weeks ago, the on-board data system comprises not only Bluetooth, but wireless and KleerNet and allows you to run the whole car from your iPad if you so desire. There's a 200gb hard drive, app functionality and the optional Burmester stereo has 24 speakers and 1540 watts of power.
In the long wheelbase version you can specify up to five different kinds of seats and the whole First Class Rear thing. This car is all about the inside. The outside? Well, it’s difficult to tell from the pictures, but it looks less dynamic than the current car. Looks shorter too, although it’s actually a smidge longer (by 20mm, 15mm of which translates in to rear knee room).
Innovations? Well, on the outside the new S-Class has dispensed with lightbulbs altogether. So if you are someone who is starting to get bored of all those sparkly little tags chasing you down the road, we’re sorry — the new S Class is all LED. Over 500 of them apparently. Ouch.
You will have noticed that we have still yet to mention the world-first technology, the serious world first technology. Well as far as we can tell there is only one BIG IDEA making its debut here, though many of the then-new ideas from the SL make their way onwards. It’s something called ‘Road Surface Scan’, and like many of the devices M-B insists on Capitalising, it is just that; a little camera that scans the roads and sets up the suspension to deal with the bumps before they happen.

The system is of course plugged in to the rest of the car’s safety systems so the Pre-Safe we knew gets upgraded and now includes systems like rear seat belt airbags, of the kind that will be familiar to anyone who’s flown Virgin Upper Class. Not that we expect many of the buyers of this car will have. They’ll be in first. Or in their own planes.

New 2014 Mercedes S-Class

New official pictures of the new Mercedes S-class have been revealed, this time released by the manufacturer itself prior to the car's reveal later today.
The new images show the S-class being delivered to its German launch venue by plane.

Mercedes had revealed a series of photographs of the interiors of the S-class earlier which have been designed with an emphasis on rear-seat passenger comfort and what Mercedes bosses call the “essence of luxury”.

This new luxury barge will compete with the likes of Bentley Continental Spur, the Audi A8, BMW 7-seriesand the Jaguar XJ.

Goetz Renner, Mercedes’ head of customer research, says the S-class has been conceived around the vision of “energising comfort”. Mercedes researchers say they are reacting to the global “mega-trend” for “health and fitness and the need for work/life balance” where people “need to relax to preserve their resources”. The upshot is innovations such as an on-board scent diffuser and ‘energising’ massage seats, as our detailed look explains.

DASHBOARD
The instrument binnacle is made up of two 12.3-inch TFT screens. The left display shows — in digital form — conventional speedo and rev counter dials, and on the right is the control screen/multimedia/sat-nav display. Ambient lighting makes the instruments appear free-standing.
STEERING WHEEL
The unusual two-spoke wheel design will be unique to the S-class, says Mercedes. As in most luxury cars, the wheel can be heated, but the S-class will also have the option of heated armrests.

CLIMATE CONTROL
The S-class comes with a new individual climate control system called Thermotronic. Two combined filters feature, one for fine dust and one made from activated charcoal filters. Also, an ionising system can filter out various viruses and spores.
DASH DETAIL
This interior design theme was developed by Mercedes’ design studio in Como, northern Italy. It was based around the theory of an ‘appreciation model’ where, instead of upgrading a functional interior to become more luxurious, manufacturing restraints were removed and designers tried to transform creative ideas into reality.
DOOR PANEL
The only plastic used in the interior is the lining of the aperture for the door release. All other materials are either wood, leather or aluminium. The shutlines between the components and trim are unusually tight, seemingly achieved by pushing the controls and trim parts through the leather facing.
SEAT SWITCHES
The close-up view of the seat controls shows how switchgear is tightly fitted to the leather trim. The laser-etched aluminium speaker trim is fitted with the range-topping Burmester hi-fi.

REAR INTERIOR
Long-wheelbase models come with the option of ‘Executive’ reclining individual seats. The backrest on the nearside rear seat can tilt to 43.5deg, the most in any car, and the Chauffeur package allows the front seat to be pushed forward. The Executive package includes a ‘Business’ centre console that can house two bottles in the central chiller and has cupholders that can both chill and heat.
FULL INTERIOR
Interior space is slightly improved over the current S-class’. Features include seatbelt holsters that rise electrically when passengers get in to aid seatbelt fastening. Rear seatbelts also have integrated airbags. Reclining seats get an airbag under the seat cushion, designed to stop a reclining passenger from sliding out from under the seatbelt in an accident.

SEAT
The front seats are a claimed 20kg lighter, mainly thanks to a new steel and plastic construction method. They can be specified with a ‘Comfort’ package that mimics a hot-stone massage. Mercedes builds the E-class and S-class seats in-house. The current E-class has 300,000 possible seat specifications. The new S-class will have “considerably more”.
SOUND SYSTEM
The range-topping sound system has been designed with top-end hi-fi manufacturer Burmester. It has 24 speakers and 1540 watts of power and uses a new design of bass bin. The 3D setting is said to provide an extraordinary sound stage.

STRUCTURE
Mercedes engineers have gone to extreme lengths to reduce the amount of noise that filters into the S-class cabin. To that end, torsional stiffness has been increased by 14 percent, lateral bending by 11 percent and vertical bending by 17 percent.
To help damp out noise, vibration and harshness from the drivetrain, the car’s front chassis legs are made of extruded aluminium and cast aluminium is used as mounting points for the front structure on to the bulkhead and for the strut mounts.
A mix of sound-deadening materials, insulation and damping materials have been attached to the car’s body structure. Damping foil is used on the floorpan and liners made of absorbing materials are used in the rear wheel arches to reduce noise. The sealing systems around the windows and door handles have been upgraded and the A-pillars and door mirrors redesigned to cut wind noise.
SCENT
The S-class includes a built-in atomiser, which diffuses scents into the cabin. Mercedes has worked with perfume specialist Marc vom Ende, who has developed five scents specifically for the car.

Force Gurkha

This new edition Gurkha has received a face lift but still looks a lot like the G-Wagen that it was based on. The refresh consists of grey plastic shrouding around the headlamps and grill merging into grey side cladding which replaces the black cladding on the old model. The rear bumper too has received a refresh and the Gurkha now rides on 16 inch alloys from the Force One SUV, albeit with a set of 245/70 R16 off-road tyres. What really stands out is the functional snorkel leaving no doubt of the Gurkha’s intentions – to go as far off-road as possible and then some. The interiors are still bare basic and utilitarian and while the seats are comfortable they are nothing to write home about. Materials and build quality are average while some of the plastics used (the outer ac vents) are of poor quality.
At its heart is a 2.6-litre direct injection diesel, sourced from Mercedes-Benz. It makes 82PS at 3200rpm and 230Nm between 1800-2000rpm. This is still a BS III certified power train but Force says that they plan to replace this with a new BS IV compliant unit soon. The four wheel drive system is lever selectable with high and low speed options that give the Gurkha a claimed 40 degree accent angle. Then for really sticky situations you have the option of locking either front, rear or both axles. It boasts class leading approach and departure angles and the snorkel allows a water wading ability of up to 550mm. There was only a small straight section of tarmac on the test track to test its road abilities but I got the impression that there would be quite a bit of body roll. The early power delivery coupled with the power steering on the other hand should make light work in urban environments.
It’s cracked every obstacle at the test track with ease and with its off-road credentials I don’t think a real world scenario would be any different. It is purpose built and makes not bones about it. It should appeal to farm and plantation owners and land developers who love to go out and get all muddy.
Priced at Rs 8.50 lakh (ex-Pune), the Gurkha is considerably more expensive than the Mahindra Thar (Rs 7.15 lakh). But what you will get for the premium you pay is a hard top vehicle with considerable off-road abilities. The soft top is slightly cheaper at Rs 8.35 lakh while there is also a 4X2 soft top which will be launched later at Rs 6.25 lakh.

Lamborghini Egoista

Lamborghini unveiled the Egoista concept, a car which may not be in the scheme of things for a launch soon but already promises it’s would-be owner real exclusivity with its design. The styling has been inspired from the Apache helicopter and the bodywork, in Lamborghini’s speak is “a bull preparing to charge, its horns lowered”. There are no aerodynamic appendages on the top but flaps integrated into the bodywork, which depending on the driving conditions, act automatically. At high speeds, two flaps at the rear activate automatically to increase stability. The headlamps and taillights are LED clearance lamps which work in a 3D fashion. Additionally, at the front, hidden from view are two Xenon lights. Those cool orange rims that you see in the picture are made from antiradar materials and to increase aerodynamics, have carbon-fibre plates.

Just when we thought our eyes had recovered from the made and crazy angles an cuts of the Veneno, Lambo shoves at us this latest concept- the Egoista, and guess what? Its even edgier!

The unveiling of this concept comes hot on the heels of the news that Lamborghini will be manufacturing the Urus SUV by 2017

A single racing seat with a four-point seatbelt adorns the aluminium-carbon fiber interiors. Just like in jet fighters, there is a head-up display. As it is, supercar owners usually have an ardous task getting in and out of their vehicles, the Lamborghini Egoista concept takes it a few notches higher. In proper race-car style, the driver will have to remove the steering wheel and perform a few callisthenic acts before he can get out of the car.
Now the engine. The Lamborghini Egoista is powered by a 600PS 5.2-litre V10 motor and while the Italian car maker hasn’t divulged any details about the 0-100 times or even the top speed, expect the hypercar to toe the lines of the Veneno and Aventador with sub 3-second timings.
